LIFEGUARDS With nearly 800 team members in the Department’s Lifeguard Division, lifeguards are responsible for protecting 72 miles of coastline, including 31 miles of sandy beaches and Catalina Island. DISPATCH Nearly 100 dispatchers at the Department’s 9-1-1 Dispatch Center answer nearly 500,000 calls per year and dispatch units to more than 395,000 incidents. PREVENTION The Department educates the community about the benefits of proper safety practices and identifies and eliminates all types of hazardous conditions that pose a threat to life, the environment and property. Marrone has been a member of the County of Los Angeles Fire Department for 39 years and a chief officer for the past 27 years. Chief O’Brien started his career as a volunteer firefighter with the City of Sierra Madre. After graduating from high school, he completed paramedic training at the Los Angeles County Paramedic Training Institute and was hired by the City of Monrovia as a full-time firefighter/paramedic until he joined the County of Los Angeles in 1999. READ MORE Deputy Fire Chief | North Regional Operations Bureau Brian Martin Deputy Fire Chief Brian Martin has served the public for the last 27 years. He began his professional firefighting career with the City of Encinitas prior to joining the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) in 2002. Chief Martin promoted through the ranks from firefighter to deputy fire chief. In April 2024, he was appointed to deputy fire chief and was assigned to the Leadership and Professional Standards Bureau. Chief Martin has recently been assigned to the North Regional Operations Bureau in July of 2025. READ MORE DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF | CENTRAL REGIONAL OPERATIONS BUREAU Robert Harris Deputy Fire Chief Robert Harris started his career at the age of 19 after he was appointed reserve firefighter with the City of Montebello Fire Department. Chief Harris began his service with the County of Los Angeles Fire Department in May 1992, and has promoted through the ranks from firefighter to firefighter specialist, fire captain, battalion chief, and assistant fire chief. Chief Harris served as acting deputy fire chief and was appointed to deputy fire chief of the Central Regional Operations Bureau in June of 2024. He began his professional firefighting career with the City of Encinitas prior to joining the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) in 2002. Chief Martin promoted through the ranks from firefighter to deputy fire chief. In April 2024, he was appointed to deputy fire chief and was assigned to the Leadership and Professional Standards Bureau. There are nearly 4,800 personnel working within the Department’s emergency and business operations bureaus. EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES The Department is committed to providing prompt, clinically skilled and caring medical service to ensure positive outcomes for everyone, every time. URBAN SEARCH AND RESCUE & HAZARDOUS MATERIALS The Department is home to a variety of world-renowned special urban search and rescue resources and highly skilled team members, including the California Task Force 2 (also known as USA Task Force 2) that is qualified to respond to local, national and international disasters. Additionally, the Department’s Haz-Mat program is designed to address the natural, technological, or purposeful response challenges, including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) threats to our communities and national security. AIR & WILDLAND The Department maintains a fleet of ten helicopters for paramedic transport, hoist rescues and wildland firefighting. Contract aircraft are also available during wildfire season. Nine camps are also staffed year-round for fire suppression, fire road maintenance and miscellaneous projects. LIFEGUARDS With nearly 800 team members in the Department’s Lifeguard Division, lifeguards are responsible for protecting 72 miles of coastline, including 31 miles of sandy beaches and Catalina Island. DISPATCH Nearly 100 dispatchers at the Department’s 9-1-1 Dispatch Center answer nearly 500,000 calls per year and dispatch units to more than 395,000 incidents. PREVENTION The Department educates the community about the benefits of proper safety practices and identifies and eliminates all types of hazardous conditions that pose a threat to life, the environment and property.
