ANIMAL SEARCH IF YOU WISH TO ADOPT All Adoptions conducted in person and if you are interested in adopting a pet, click below to view the animals in our care. You can also see additional pets available for adoption in our community via Home To Homeβ’, our animal re-homing partner. SGVHSβs adoption hours are by appointment only from 12:00 P.M. β 3:00 P.M. For an appointment, please call (626) 286-1159: Tuesday β Sunday between 8:00 A.M. β 5:00 P.M. VIEW ANIMALS HOME TO HOMEβ’ PROTECTIVE CUSTODY HOLD Our humane and animal control officers investigate cases of suspected animal cruelty that may require the removal of animals from properties. Sometimes, we house these animals throughout the duration of the investigation. While these animals might not be listed on the website, please note that not every animal housed in our shelter is available for adoption. MEDICAL HOLD An animal may be receiving ongoing treatment while they are in our care. Some animals are placed on a temporary medical hold until our veterinary staff clears them for adoption. STRAY HOLD When animals come into our shelter, they are automatically placed under a temporary stray hold per state and local laws. This gives time to reunite pets with their owners. If an animal comes into our shelter with a valid form of identification including a current license or microchip, they may be held for an extended period of time. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED We conduct adoptions on a first come, first served basis. While we recognize that this may be frustrating, our main objective is to find great homes for our animals. If the animal you are interested in has been adopted, please ask our team about our other animals. We have many animals that are looking for their forever homes and would make a great addition to your family. Adoptions are processed within the hour that they occur. And although our customer care staff works quickly to reflect the change in status, website delays may occur. Keep in mind that the animal you are interested in may be adopted by the time you arrive for your walk-through. As a reminder, adoptions are not guaranteed, and we encourage you to inquire about other animals that need a home during your visit. ANIMAL SEARCH PET PARTNERS Did you know that San Gabriel Valley Humane Society and Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. have remote adoption centers for cats? Our Tax ID number is 95-1660842. We provide animal care and control services to the cities of San Gabriel, Temple City, and limited animal control and sheltering services for the City of Duarte. AN OPEN-ACCESS SHELTER The doors to San Gabriel Valley Humane Society are open to every animal in need. Because we are an open-access shelter, no stray animal from our community is ever turned away through managed intake. Many other shelters, animal care facilities and sanctuaries define themselves as βno-killβ shelters. While we salute the work of animal welfare groups everywhere, we find the label of βno-killβ to be inaccurate. Organizations like these are better defined as βlimited accessβ shelters because they have the option of turning away animals for health, behavior and in some instances cosmetic reasons. In order to comply with their idealistic arrangement, and maintain their public image, they have to restrict their intake of animals to only those that have the best chance of being adopted. As an open-access shelter, we take in sick and injured animals and those that may not be probable candidates for adoption. Everyday dozens of pets that are no longer wanted are turned over to our caring hands. Every day we accept pets from people who are unable to care for them anymore and our doors open for the dozens of stray animals that are lost, abandoned and homeless. At our core is our obligation to care for these animals and give them compassion and a second chance. VIEW ARTICLE our mission The objectives and purposes of San Gabriel Valley Humane Society are: To provide a safe refuge for all sick, injured, abused, and abandoned animals that have no other alternatives. To lead the community in finding homes for all adoptable pets. To foster compassion for all living things through education and outreach. To promote the health and wellness of all pets in our community by providing accessible and affordable veterinary care. To reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs. To prevent cruelty by advocating and enforcing animal protection laws. OUR HISTORY The San Gabriel Valley Humane Societyβs Founder was Mrs. Fannie Thompson Kessler, a preacherβs daughter from Elkhart, Indiana who became a fearless, female trailblazer. Born before the Civil War, in 1859, and widowed in 1895, she married Warren Kessler, a successful businessman, in 1905. She was hardworking and well-traveled. Fannie became an outspoken advocate for animal rights. She organized the American Animal Defense League to combat cruelty in the training of animals for vaudeville, movies and circuses. In 1924, at the age of 65, she founded the Alhambra-San Gabriel Humane Society, which provided services for both farm and domestic animals. The shelter doubled in size when its neighbor property was donated in the interest of Fannieβs humanitarian work.",
